An important aspect of our mission as a church is the Pastoral Works of Broken Bay, the pastoral charity of our Diocese.
Our Pastoral works form an important part of our mission as a faithful community in
Christ, accompanying families and those in need, and introducing our children in public
schools to the goodness, truth and beauty of our faith.
The Diocese holds two Pastoral Works appeals each year, in May and November.
However, you can support and donate to our Appeal at any time outside of these two
months. The Appeal supports two key Diocesan ministries that get little or no
government funding. They are:
The Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD). More than 700 trained volunteer
catechists provide religious education to over 12,000 Catholic students in public
schools in our local parish communities. They play a vital role in the evangelisation of
young people and their families, and without your support, thousands of young people
in our Diocese would be without any Catholic education.
Hospital Chaplaincy & Pastoral Care Program. In the last financial year, our Priests
and Pastoral Care Practitioners engaged with around 2,000 individuals (including
patients, their families, friends, carers, and even hospital staff) across the seven
hospitals in which they minister – a total of around 5,000 pastoral visits. Their special
ministry supports patients and their families when they are at their most vulnerable, and they are there for those who may not have a family. This may involve a simple
conversation or a listening ear, as well as prayer, and importantly, the ministering of Holy Communion.
